Iskandar Jalil: Shibui – The Unobtrusive Beauty
(Re)Branding, School Project, 2017

The National Gallery Singapore had hosted an exhibition on a leading Singapore ceramicist, Iskandar Jalil in 2017. The exhibition traces the journeys and diverse cultural sources which inform his works and practice of ceramic art, his deep relationship with clay has shaped his practice as a potter and his philosophy on life.

During an interview with Iskandar Jalil, he had expressed his concern,
"I hope that there will always be someone to continue my work, as a teacher and as a craftsman."

The brief was to rebrand the exhibition, and my approach was to rebrand it through his ethos of art and life. Thus, the title, 'Shibui – The Unobtrusive Beauty'. The objective is a call of action for the culture of pottery to be known and preserved in this modern era. The concept was derived by using a metaphor as an expression. His concern was to have someone to continue his work and to uphold the importance of form in this art. Hence, I have chosen three of my favourite pieces that not only resembles the importance of form but shares similar motifs as perishables. A fish, a cabbage, and a bread, to represent and strengthen the concept of a culture, if not preserved, will expire like perishables.
